Over a Century of Tennis Tradition in Mosman

Nestled in the heart of Sydney’s Lower North Shore, the Mosman Lawn Tennis Club has been a cornerstone of the local community for over 120 years. Established in 1901, this proud institution has stood the test of time, bringing people together through a shared love of tennis, camaraderie, and a commitment to excellence.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just picking up a racquet, there’s no better place to play than on the courts where champions have trained and generations have gathered.

A Rich and Storied Past

The story began in 1901 with the formation of the Mosman Recreation Club. By 1903, the first facilities, including four tennis courts, a bowling green, and quoits pitches opened on Belmont Road.

Tennis quickly captured the community’s enthusiasm, and by 1914, the growing number of players led to the acquisition of a new site in Rosebery Street, dedicated solely to tennis. After months of dedication and hard work, play officially commenced in 1915, marking the founding of The Mosman Tennis Co Ltd.

Just two years later, in 1917, the original clubhouse was built.

Growth, Legacy, and Club Spirit

In 1950, changes to liquor laws enabled sporting clubs to obtain liquor licences, prompting a major upgrade to the clubhouse.

Thanks to generous support from members and the Bank of New South Wales, the club expanded its facilities with new changing rooms, showers, and a welcoming bar area. This spirit of reinvestment and community support has continued ever since.

In 1972, a new chapter began with the formation of Mosman Lawn Tennis Club Ltd, a company limited by guarantee. For the first time, the word ‘Lawn’ was formally added to the Club’s title – a homage to its iconic grass courts and traditional roots.

Modernisation and Renewal

The Club continued to evolve with the installation of mod grass courts in 1980, upgraded further in 1985 to ensure year-round play and sustainable revenue.

In 2010, a new partnership with a resident coach helped open the club’s doors to a broader community audience and created valuable coaching and development opportunities.

In 2023, the club underwent a major transformation, resurfacing all courts with new synthetic turf, refreshing the landscape, and installing modern lighting to extend play into the evening. We thank the Redlands school for their partnership in this project.

These upgrades have elevated the playing experience and ensured MLTC remains one of the premier tennis destinations on the North Shore.

A New Era Begins

With the official reopening celebrated on 23 March 2024, the Mosman Lawn Tennis Club continues to blend rich tradition with a vibrant, inclusive future. Whether you’re chasing championships or simply enjoying a social hit, MLTC offers a unique blend of heritage, community, and world-class facilities.

More than a club it’s a local tradition, shared by generations…
